PSHE

PSHE Curriculum Intent

At Sproatley, the intent of our PSHE curriculum is to equip children with the knowledge, skills, and confidence they need to thrive in a modern, ever-changing world. We aim to create a safe and supportive environment where pupils feel empowered to make informed, healthy, and safe choices about their lives. Our curriculum promotes understanding and respect for the diverse society we live in, helping children to appreciate difference, challenge discrimination, and develop tolerance towards others. Through PSHE, we strive to nurture responsible, resilient individuals who are prepared to contribute positively to their communities and the wider world.

PSHE Curriculum Implementation

At Sproatley Endowed CE Academy, we deliver PSHE lessons weekly to each class, with sessions taught by the class teacher. The statutory PSHE content is integrated with RSE learning, and the objectives are covered across three core themes: Relationships, Living in the Wider World, and Health and Wellbeing. These themes are taught over a two-year cycle.

In EYFS and Key Stage One, weekly lessons are delivered using picture books, circle time, and activities that help children explore and understand their emotional wellbeing. As students progress through the school, the complexity of PSHE and RSE learning increases to address more advanced topics. Daily emotional wellbeing check-ins provide a safe space for all children to discuss their feelings.

Many of the themes taught in PSHE are also reflected in our whole-school assemblies, where we reinforce the core British Values of Democracy, Rule of Law, Respect and Tolerance, and Individual Liberty. These assemblies also provide opportunities to explore children’s spiritual, moral, social, and cultural understanding.
