Music Curriculum Intent

At Sproatley, we believe music is a universal language that inspires creativity, self-expression, and joy. We have chosen our curriculum to nurture a lifelong love of music, enabling every child to develop the confidence to listen, perform, and create.

We want our children to:

  • Enjoy and engage with music by experiencing it as both listeners and performers, finding joy in their own creativity and the creativity of others.

  • Discuss music with confidence through the use of appropriate musical vocabulary, enabling them to describe, evaluate, and reflect on what they hear and perform.

  • Work together and communicate effectively, using music-making as a collaborative process that builds teamwork and mutual respect.

  • Express and explore emotions, recognising how music can reflect, communicate, and influence feelings, and developing the ability to talk about their emotional responses.

  • Appreciate music across time and cultures, developing an awareness of its rich diversity and its role in shaping human experience across history and the world.

  • Become lifelong musicians, whether as active participants or appreciative listeners, equipped with the skills and curiosity to continue their musical journey beyond school.

Music Curriculum Implementation

We use a condensed scheme of work from Kapow for our music lessons. Music takes place every other half term.

All pupils – attend our 30 minute whole-school music assembly once a week delivered by our Music Lead – Listening and Singing.

EYFS pupils – receive a 30 minute music lesson based on traditional rhyme and song with lots of opportunities to explore instruments, sing and perform.

KS1 pupils – receive a 60 min music lesson every other half term using a range of untuned percussion plus lots of singing, composing and music games

KS2 pupils – receive a 60 minute music lesson every other half term with our teaching team. Children explore the full range of musical dimensions and have opportunities to play instruments including tuned and untuned percussion. Lower Key Stage 2 completes two half terms of instrumental tuition using recorders.

Our children also have access to instrumental tuition delivered by specialist teachers from the East Riding. We offer strings, woodwind, piano and guitar.
