History

Intent

Our History curriculum aims to ignite a curiosity about the past in all our pupils, enabling them to gain a deep, coherent knowledge and understanding of their locality, Britain’s past and the history of the wider world. We aim to promote perceptive questioning and critical thinking. It is our intent to deliver a History curriculum which is rich and exciting, brings the past to life and provides as many first hand experiences as possible. Through the teaching of History we hope to enable children to begin to understand the reality of people’s lives in the past, the changes that have occurred in our diverse societies and the impact of the past on the present. Our curriculum helps pupils understand historical concepts, methods of enquiry, and how different aspects of the past have been interpreted. We equip students to ask historical questions and make connections across different time periods. Key concepts such as chronology, enquiry, interpretation, cause and effect, similarity and difference are revisited and developed over time.

Implementation

History units are taught on a two year cycle with History taught every other half term and with each unit consisting of lessons based around key questions. Children have opportunities to use a range of sources, including photographs and oral histories, and apply a range of strategies to explore, discuss and interpret these. History learning is brought to life through visits and visitors, use of a range of artefacts and drama strategies. Children are encouraged to ask questions, debate ideas, and develop their own interpretations of the past.
