Art & Design

Intent

At Sproatley Endowed CE Academy, our aim is for all children to acquire the knowledge and skills needed to be creative, expressive, and responsive in their art learning, in line with the National Curriculum. We strive to spark children’s imaginations and nurture confidence in exploring creativity across a range of media. Our intention is to provide an Art and Design curriculum that is engaging, enriching, and connected to topic work, offering as many first-hand experiences as possible. The curriculum will build knowledge of a diverse range of notable artists, designers, and craft makers while developing skills in drawing, painting, printing and sculpture. Through Art and Design, we aim to help children refine their techniques, think critically, and evaluate both their own work and the work of others.

Implementation

At our school, Art and Design is closely linked to our topics, as we believe it provides a valuable way to explore themes in greater depth. We teach three topics each year on a two-year cycle. Planning is informed by previous art teaching, learning outcomes, and pupil voice. Art and Design is brought to life through the use of our local environment, films and photographs, creative artefacts, works of art, and technology. Children are supported in developing skills appropriate to their age, with learning connected meaningfully to their topic work. Their work is shared with others, and children are encouraged to support one another, reflecting, evaluating, and improving their creations collaboratively.
